A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE JACKSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS JROTC PROGRAMS ON WINNING THE HONOR UNIT WITH DISTINCTION AWARD.
WHEREAS, eight Jackson Public Schools JROTC programs were recently awarded the Honor Unit with Distinction Award by the United States Army Cadet Command, recognizing these programs and their cadets as being among the top JROTC programs in the country; and
WHEREAS, the young men and women of the JROTC programs of Bailey Magnet, Calloway, Forest Hill, Jim Hill, Murrah, Provine and Wingfield High Schools are to be recognized as having attained the title of Honor Unit with Distinction and Lanier High School for Honor Unit for the 1998-1999 school year; and
WHEREAS, honor units with distinction are among the top 20 percent of schools and honor units are among the top 50 percent of schools within the Second Region Headquarters at Fort Knox, Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, the Jackson Public Schools have a corps of cadets averaging over 1,400 cadets annually with a dropout rate of less than two percent and a higher education rate of more than 80 percent; and
WHEREAS, the JROTC programs support community activities, including the Mississippi Arts Festival for special needs individuals, visits to the Sonny G. Montgomery Veterans Hospital and the Mississippi State Veterans Nursing Home, and free car wash services to inner city residents; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Lucius Wright, the Jackson Public Schools JROTC programs have excelled in community service, academics and higher education; and
WHEREAS, these eight schools have demonstrated outstanding teamwork, leadership and scholarship in showcasing their talent and representing the Jackson Public School District and their individual schools by receiving one of the top unit awards that can be bestowed upon a JROTC unit; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young men and women of our state, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the Jackson Public Schools JROTC programs and Lieutenant Colonel Lucius Wright on receiving the Honor Unit with Distinction Award.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Lieutenant Colonel Lucius Wright, each of the eight high schools mentioned above and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
